Town of Atlantic Beach Receives
Report Concerning Water Quality Issues - Work Session
Scheduled to Further Examine Information
(Atlantic Beach, NC) – The Town of Atlantic Beach
recently received from the Department of Environment and
Natural Resources (DENR) a copy of a report previously
unknown to Town Officials concerning water quality and
the effects of septic systems on that water. The EPA
Report # 904/9-76-017 Finger – Fill Canal Studies
Florida and North Carolina was released in May of 1975
but was unknown to Town Officials until recently.
Although the information included is obviously dated,
the nature of the data as it relates to the relatively
unchanged dynamics of septic tank use in Atlantic Beach
makes further explanation and interpretation of the
report worthwhile.
The Mayor and Town Council will hold a Work Session at
1:00 pm August 27, 2007 at Town Hall, with
representatives of the Carteret County Health Department
and North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural
Resources to discuss the information included in the
report plus other issues related to water quality.
The Town of Atlantic Beach continues to place emphasis
on the water quality of our oceanfront, streams, canals
and Bogue Sound, understanding their healthy existence
is a key to our quality of life, both in terms of public
health and as the economic engine that drives our local
economy.
