Questions answered by Lt. Steven
Lockhart, Benefits & Safety Officer w/ NC Dept of Crime Control &
Public Safety.
1.
Can officers who have already returned to work from recent injuries
who were unaware of this benefit still apply for back-benefits?
Yes---as long as the injury / illness occurred within the last 24
months or within 24 months of submitting the claim.
2.
If officers are out on workman’s comp will they still be eligible
for this benefit?
Yes---the benefits of this plan are in addition to any other
benefits the officer may have. Remember---Officers approved for
limited or light duty are also entitled to benefits up to 52 weeks
as long as they are unable to perform their normal duties.
3.
We also have temporary disability insurance carried by the town, and
some officers also carry additional injury/disability insurance and
both require that we report all sources of income while they are out
due to injuries, will the fact that we have additional benefits
affect eligibility for this benefit? (i.e. Might they cancel one
another or might they be required to repay other benefits already
received if they are approved for this?)
No… the benefits of this plan are in addition to any other benefits
the officer may have. Remember---Officers approved for limited or
light duty are also entitled to benefits up to 52 weeks as long as
they are unable to perform their normal duties.
